Is dental insurance really insurance?
What Augusta, GA patients should know.

Dental insurance can be confusing—and at times, frustrating—for many patients. While we often refer to it as “insurance,” it may be more accurate to think of it as a discount plan or “coupon” that helps offset a portion of your dental investment, rather than fully covering treatment. At Comprehensive Dentistry of Augusta, we want every patient in the Augusta, GA area to feel confident understanding their benefits before they sit in the chair.
Why dental insurance hasn’t kept up
Unlike medical insurance, most dental plans have changed very little over the past several decades. Annual maximums today are often similar to what they were in the 1980s, despite the significant rise in the cost of delivering high-quality, modern dental care. Advances in technology, materials, and patient experience have dramatically improved what dentistry can offer, but insurance coverage hasn’t kept pace.
Common limitations patients run into
Because of this, many plans come with limitations. For example:
- Only about half of patients with dental insurance fully utilize their annual benefits
- Some claims may be delayed, reduced, or denied
- Certain procedures may be “downgraded” to a lower-cost alternative
A common example is crowns. While we often recommend tooth-colored crowns for both function and aesthetics, some insurance plans may only reimburse based on a metal crown—covering what they consider the “minimum acceptable” treatment, not necessarily the best or most natural-looking option.
Our philosophy at Comprehensive Dentistry of Augusta
It’s important to understand that insurance companies are designed to manage costs, not to make clinical decisions about your care. Our priority at Comprehensive Dentistry of Augusta is to always recommend what is best for your long-term oral health, function, and confidence.
Our practice is a fee-for-service office, which means we are not contracted with insurance companies. This allows us to focus entirely on what is best for you—without being limited by the restrictions or reduced treatment options that often come with in-network plans.
That said, you can absolutely still use your dental insurance at our office.
While we are not contracted, many insurance plans offer out-of-network benefits that reimburse you directly for a portion of your care, many times at a higher reimbursement rate than contracted offices! Our team is happy to help you understand your benefits, submit claims on your behalf, and estimate your reimbursement so there are no surprises.
The key difference is this: instead of your treatment being dictated by an insurance company, your care is guided by what is best for your health—and your insurance can still play a role in helping offset that investment.
Is your plan actually worth it?
For some patients, dental insurance—especially when subsidized by an employer—can still be a helpful benefit. However, if you are paying for a plan out of pocket, it’s worth evaluating whether it truly provides value for your needs.
Many patients in Augusta find that alternatives like in-office membership plans offer greater transparency, flexibility, and overall benefit. That’s why we created the Denvantage Plan—our own in-office membership program designed specifically for patients at Comprehensive Dentistry of Augusta. Denvantage covers preventive care visits, includes discounts on most treatments, and has no annual maximums, no waiting periods, and no claim denials. It’s a straightforward alternative built around your actual dental needs—not an insurance company’s cost model. Learn more about the Denvantage Plan →
